BRØNSTED-LOWRY ACID-BASE PAIRS: Name: __________________________ p. ____

According to Brønsted-Lowry theory, an acid is a proton ( H+1) donor, and a base is a proton acceptor.

The HCl acts as an acid, the OH-1 as a base. This reaction is reversible in that the H2O can give back the proton to the Cl-1.

Label the Brønsted-Lowry acids and bases in the following reactions and show the direction of proton transfer.
Example:

1. H2O + H2O H3O+1 + OH-1

.

2. H2SO4 + OH-1 HSO4-1 + H2O

.

3. HSO4-1 + H2O SO4-2 + H3O+1

.

 4. OH-1 + H3O+1 H2O + H2O

.

5. NH3 + H2O NH4+1 + OH-1

.
